Continuing a Legacy of Giving: Nichols Farms and Community Philanthropy
At Nichols Farms, community involvement isn’t just a value, it’s a way of life. Deeply rooted in the vision of Susie Nichols, this commitment to giving back remains a driving force behind the company’s philanthropic efforts. For Susie, generosity was second nature, and today, her spirit continues to shape Nichols Farms mission of making a meaningful impact.
Susie Nichols was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who played a vital role in Nichols Farms alongside her husband, Chuck Nichols. Known for her warmth, generosity, and love for family, she helped shape the family farm’s legacy while creating cherished traditions. Susie’s kindness and dedication to both her loved ones and her community left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her.
“My mother-in-law, Susie Nichols, believed wholeheartedly in the power of community, and she instilled that belief into our company’s culture,” shares Mary-Alice (Paulsen) Nichols. “Thanks to Susie, philanthropy remains a fundamental pillar of Nichols Farms, one we will always uphold.”
With a strong background in nonprofit work, including experience in the nonprofit sector of Salesforce, Mary-Alice found it a natural transition to further support philanthropic initiatives in California’s Central Valley. Inspired by Susie’s dedication, the Nichols family continues to champion various charitable organizations, ensuring her legacy of giving lives on. Today, Nichols Farms proudly supports FoodLink of Tulare County, Valley Children’s Hospital, the Ronald McDonald House of the Central Valley, CASA of Tulare County, Visalia Emergency Aid, Family Services of Tulare County, KCAO, and the programs of Cafe Eden.
Susie’s commitment to community welfare was unwavering.
She was a longtime supporter of FoodLink, Kaweah Hospital, and Valley Children’s Hospital, always advocating for the health and wellbeing of children and families in the Central Valley. Her passion for empowering future generations led to the establishment of several impactful programs at Nichols Farms.
One of her most treasured initiatives is the Nichols Farms Backpack Program. Understanding the importance of education, Susie ensured that the children and grandchildren of Nichols Farms’ employees were well prepared for the school year. Today, the program continues to equip students with new backpacks and essential school supplies, easing the burden on families and fostering academic success.
The Nichols Farms Scholarship Program is another cornerstone of the company’s philanthropic efforts. Over the years, this initiative has grown significantly, providing scholarships for employees’ children and grandchildren pursuing higher education. In the past year alone, Nichols Farms awarded $100,000 in scholarships, a testament to the company’s dedication to education and opportunity.
During the holiday season, Nichols Farms reinforces its community ties through food drives supporting local food pantries such as FoodLink of Tulare County, a partnership proudly maintained in past years. Additionally, Nichols Farms has previously worked with the Angel Tree Program to collect and distribute hundreds of toys and gifts, bringing joy and warmth to families in need. This year, Nichols Farms continues their commitment by partnering with Kings Community Action Organization (KCAO) to “adopt” local families and children for Christmas, ensuring they experience the generosity and spirit of the season.
Continuing Susie’s tradition of service, Mary-Alice joined Las Madrinas Guild in 2018, an organization devoted to supporting Valley
Children’s Hospital. In doing so, she follows in Susie’s footsteps, just as Susie once followed those of her mother-in-law, Virginia Nichols. Virginia was a proud member of the Hanford Guild and often hosted festive fundraisers at the farm to support the hospital.
“It is an honor to carry forward the legacies of Virginia and Susie and to uphold Nichols Farms’ dedication to giving back,” reflects Mary-Alice.
Through its continued support of local nonprofits, scholarships, and community initiatives, Nichols Farms exemplifies the power of generosity. As the company grows, so does its unwavering commitment to strengthening the Central Valley with one act of kindness at a time.
