Susie's Hopeful Hearts for Research: A Legacy of Love and Compassion
Susie Nichols’ kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to her community left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her. As the heart and soul of Nichols Farms, she embodied the true spirit of giving, consistently finding meaningful ways to support those in need. Now, in her honor, the Susie’s Hopeful Hearts for Research Fundraiser continues her legacy by fighting against blood cancer.
At the helm of this meaningful initiative is Jeff Nichols, Susie’s devoted son, who has embraced the mission of raising critical funds and awareness in his mother’s name. Through his dedicated efforts, this campaign not only supports essential research through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) but also celebrates Susie’s lifelong commitment to helping others in her community.
Susie was far more than a philanthropist, she was a devoted wife, loving mother, and cherished grandmother who played a vital role in building Nichols Farms alongside her husband, Chuck Nichols. Her warmth, generosity, and deep love for family helped shape the company’s enduring legacy while creating treasured traditions that continue today.
Her commitment to community welfare never wavered. As a longtime supporter of FoodLink, Kaweah Health Medical Center, and Valley Children’s Hospital, Susie consistently advocated for the health and wellbeing of children and families throughout the Central Valley. Her compassionate spirit and hands on approach to philanthropy made a tangible difference in countless lives.

In 2021, Susie was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS), a complex form of blood cancer that ultimately took her life in 2023 after a courageous battle. MDS represents a group of cancers that start when the bone marrow, which normally makes your blood cells, stops working the way it should. Instead of producing healthy cells, it makes fewer of them, and the ones it does make might not work properly. There are various treatment approaches depending on the type of MDS, how advanced it is, the patient’s age and their overall health.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) stands at the forefront of the battle against blood cancers, including MDS. As the world’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting blood cancers, LLS has invested more than $1.5 billion in cutting edge research since its founding in 1949. LLS’s mission encompasses three critical areas. Through Research Funding, they support groundbreaking investigations that have led to nearly every major advancement in blood cancer treatment over the past 70+ years. Their Patient Support provides free information, education, and support services to patients and families. With Advocacy, they work with lawmakers to ensure patients have access to quality, affordable care.
The organization’s Visionaries of the Year program empowers community leaders to raise critical funds that directly impact those battling various blood cancers. These funds accelerate promising research projects and provide essential support services to patients undergoing difficult treatments. LLS funded research has been pivotal in developing treatments that have significantly improved survival rates for many blood cancer patients. Some recent breakthroughs include targeted therapies that attack cancer cells while sparing healthy ones, immunotherapies that harness the body’s own immune system to fight cancer, and precision medicine approaches that tailor treatment to a patient’s specific genetic profile. For MDS specifically, LLS-supported research has helped develop improved diagnostic tools to catch the disease earlier, novel drug therapies that can slow disease progression, and advancements in stem cell transplantation techniques.
The Susie’s Hopeful Hearts for Research campaign represents more than just a fundraiser, it’s a profound tribute to Susie’s remarkable spirit and the values she championed throughout her life. By rallying friends, family, and the broader community, this initiative honors her memory by bringing hope and tangible support to patients and their families when they need it most.
Jeff Nichols’ leadership of this campaign reflects his mother’s own dedication to service. We can all play a role in this vital mission. By supporting LLS in Susie’s name, we contribute directly to research initiatives and patient support programs that transform lives daily. Whether through financial donations, raising awareness, or participating in LLS events, every effort strengthens the fight against blood cancer.
To honor Susie’s memory and support this important cause, consider donating any amount through her Visionaries of the Year campaign. Your contribution will help ensure that critical research continues and that patients receive the support they need throughout their cancer journey.
Together, we can make a lasting impact and ensure that Susie Nichols’ extraordinary spirit of generosity and compassion continues to change lives for generations to come.
